How to Start Your Own Business From Home

I get asked frequently "How can I work from home?" The fact is, there are many opportunities to work from home, but...(yeah you knew that was coming)...it has...(repeat HAS)...to be something you are interested in, or at least enjoy doing, regardless of any financial return.

There are several factors you must adhere to in order to be successful working from home. The most important factor is that you requires is resources, like any business you need time, and money. Now you don't need a million dollars to get started, but it will require that you invest in the proper equipment, inventory, and know how about what you want to offer the community.

The first step is to decide what you want to do, and do some very serious research, on whether your idea is viable or not. You need to make sure there is a demand for your product or service, if there is, then you can continue forward, if not rethink your idea, and look for something people need or want.

With that said, let's continue. Once you have created your product or service, you want to distinguish it from others, this is called your selling point. Your selling point can be an add-on to an existing product or service that someone else is doing, but make sure it isn't easily copyable, you want to give yourself all the advantages you can get.

For instance, if you want to be a fitness trainer, research your competition and look for a way they are not satisfying their customers. Say for example they don't provide nutrition counseling, or they rely on free weights instead of machines...whatever they do, try adding value to what you do. Maybe they don't have a video of how the training is done, or maybe they need a more intensive approach. Whatever your competition is lacking focus on meeting or exceeding those demands.

Second, like any business you will need structure and an environment conducive to your needs as well as that of your customers. So if there is an area you don't cover or times you are not available, make sure it is known, as well as a way for your customers to contact you if they have any inquiries about your product.

Third, is to network with other businesses that may complement what you do. They may provide referrals or leads to who may be able to assist you in your endeavor.

Fourth, your marketing collateral's like your website, blog and business card will be key ways for potential customers to find out more about who you are and what kind of service they can expect.

Fifth, is to decide on the structure of your business, this blog post isn't about what structure is best, but to be a quick guide on what it takes to start your business. So as far as telling you that a partnership, or LLC or incorporating your business is the best form, only you and your attorney can answer that. Once you have chosen your profession, look for professional guidance in your area, as far as what laws, zoning are applicable and what insurance you may require in order to operate your business.

Sixth, is to expand your thinking, join groups, organizations, read books, whatever it takes to continue learning about yourself and the needs of your customers. Many owners grow stagnant and don't keep up on new laws, or selling strategies that may help them grow.

Finally, have FUN! Why work from home, if it isn't interesting or challenging in a good way. Most people look at the dollar signs and not at the service they are providing. The businesses that are successful, are so, because their environment is set to always be moving forward, and overcoming obstacles along the way.
